Team Leconte looked in impressive form on the opening night of the World Tennis Challenge at Memorial Drive, winning both singles matches to claim a 2-1 victory over Team Cash.
Fernando Verdasco got Team Leconte off to the best possible start when he defeated world No. 12 Borna Coric 6-7 6-3 [10-3] in the first match on Monday evening.
The two players needed a tiebreak to separate them after a tight first set before Verdasco secured the only break of the match in the second to level the score. A match tiebreak ensued with the Spaniard playing some aggressive tennis to secure the win.
Victoria Azarenka then gave Team Leconte an unassailable 2-0 lead when she battled past Eugenie Bouchard 6-2 5-7 [10-8] in one hour 43 minutes. The Belarusian got off to a fast start, finding herself a set and a break up before the former Wimbledon finalist started returning better, and broke twice to send the clash to a match tiebreak. Azarenka eventually took the win 10-8 to seal the victory for Team Leconte.
In the final match of the evening, Cash and Coric took a 7-6(1) victory over Leconte and Bouchard to get Team Cash on the board.
