Jurgen Melzer who earlier withdrew from the Brisbane International due to a shoulder injury has confirmed he will not be fit to play the 2014 World Tennis Challenge.
World Ranked 33, Croatian Ivan Dodig will replace Jurgen and join Team Wilander, consisting of Mats Wilander and the legendary Martina Navratilova for the three night event.
WTC Co-Tournament Director Mark Woodforde said,
“We feel for Melzer. To have an injury this close to a Grand Slam is a blow and he was certainly looking at the World Tennis Challenge being as part of his Australian Open preparation,”
“However, it’s brilliant to welcome Ivan for his first World Tennis Challenge tournament and we have no doubt he will enjoy the event playing alongside many of the sport’s best legend players.”
2013 proved a breakout year for the Croatian, reaching the third round or better at three out of four Grand Slams and breaking into the world’s top 30 for the first time.
At Wimbledon 2013, Dodig joined by doubles partner Marcelo Melo reached the finals of the tournament losing to the Bryan Brothers, 3-6 6-3 6-4 6-4.
With a smashing serve and hardcourt being his favourite surface, Dodig will provide some great tennis as he makes his debut at the 2014 World Tennis Challenge.
The current playing field for the 2014 World Tennis Challenge now stands:
Team Wilander – Mats Wilander, Martina Navratilova, Ivan Dodig
Team Cash – Pat Cash, Nicole Bradtke, Thanasi Kokkinakis
Team Leconte – Henri Leconte, Tracy Austin, Jeremy Chardy
Team Noah – Yannick Noah, Martina Hingis, Feliciano Lopez
Wildcard – Mansour Bahrami
