WTC Announce Two Current Stars for 2010
Radek Stepanek and Robby Ginepri are the first two current players to sign on for World Tennis Challenge 2010.
Stepanek, currently ranked 14 in the world, has signed on for his first World Tennis Challenge. With the new alignment of regions he will represent the International team, with the legend player still to be announced.
Tournament Co-Director Mark Woodforde thanked the South Australian Government for its continuing support of the World Tennis Challenge.
“The assistance of the South Australian Government and the South Australian Tourism Commission has been absolutely crucial to bringing John McEnroe to Adelaide for the 2010 World Tennis Challenge and to the ongoing success of the event.
“I am also thrilled that Radek Stepanek has agreed to play in the event in Adelaide.
“Radek is a world class player who has consistently been in the top 20 over many years. It is great to have someone of his calibre in the event and we look forward to naming his partner in the coming weeks.”
Ginepri is currently ranked 92 on the ATP World Tour, with a highest ranking of 15 in December 2005. He is delighted to be playing in Adelaide as a lead-up to the Australian Open in January 2010.
“I have played in Adelaide before and it is a very relaxed place to play leading into the Australian Open.”
Ginepri recently won his third ATP singles title at the Indianapolis Tennis Championships in July. The American heard about World Tennis Challenge last year and is captivated by the concept:
“Last year Jim Courier and Taylor Dent competed for the USA and did not drop a match. I am really looking forward to the competition next year and the format as well as the crowd, which I believe was huge last year.”
Asked about the idea of pairing up with some of the greatest names in tennis, Robby suggested that he was eager for the challenge:
“Players like Jim, Mats Wilander, Pat Cash and Henri Leconte are legends of the game and still compete on the seniors tour. I am looking forward to playing against them and doing the best for my team. I think we will have a strong team and hope to defend the title.
