A rivalry between tennis legends John McEnroe and Brad Gilbert is sure to create an interesting atmosphere at the World Tennis Challenge tomorrow with Team America taking on Team International.
Event co-director Darren Cahill said the singles match between the former champions was set to be a highlight of the first night’s play.
“They weren’t the greatest of friends,” Cahill said.
“Jumping back on the court now, I think it is really something to look forward to.
“John will be keen for a win.”
McEnroe will team with Tommy Haas as part of Team America, with Gilbert representing Team International alongside Stanislas Wawrinka. Europe’s Henri Leconte and Michael Llodra will take on Australasia’s Pat Rafter and Alexandr Dolgopolov from 6.30pm tomorrow night.
Challenge co-director and prominent tennis coach Roger Rasheed said the match between Dolgopolov and Llodra would be one to watch, because they were both current players at the top of their game.
The final night of Australasia against America will also be a highlight.
Rasheed said McEnroe would have to be playing at his best to defend Team America’s World Tennis Challenge title from last year.
“McEnroe is one who plays to win at all costs,” he said.
“But Pat and Alexandr is a tough team right there.” Throughout the event wildcard Mansour Bahrami will be able to jump in and take over for any player during the doubles matches.
“He has the whole stadium watching him,” Rasheed said. “He’ll drift in if the older guys need a break.”
